Trade-in, taxes & upfront fees

Enter the combined vehicle tax rate from your quote. Standard examples: Ontario 13%, Nova Scotia 14%, NB/NL/PEI 15%, Alberta/territories 5%. BC/SK/MB/QC and private-sale rules require the applicable vehicle rate.

First lease quote

Enter your written dealer quote. Prices include freight and inspection; add only charges not already in the price.

Turn this off for a separate lease quote. Down payment, rates, fees and running costs remain independent.

Deposit, return & buyout fees

Deposits affect cash due but are assumed fully refunded. Returning and buying are separate scenarios; return charges do not apply to a cash buyout.

Distance & excess kilometres
Running costs for this option

Enter after-tax monthly averages for this vehicle over the comparison period. Loan, first lease and second lease can differ.

The first vehicle is returned. The second quote is an assumption about a future vehicle; it starts when the first lease ends. Review resale values for this longer horizon.

Copying does not copy trade-in value or debt: the returned leased vehicle is not yours to trade. Enter any separate trade-in explicitly. Deposits, down payments and fees apply to each lease.

Second lease quote · future assumption

Enter your written dealer quote. Prices include freight and inspection; add only charges not already in the price.

Payment and delivery cash breakdown

Loan delivery cash excludes the first payment. Each lease includes its first payment and refundable deposit. Deposits are excluded from cost after a full refund.

Detailed cost comparison

Cost after vehicle value = cash spent + net trade-in equity + debt remaining − vehicle value retained. The final buyout is paid in cash.

Resale sensitivity & break-even

Only resale assumptions change in these scenarios. Running costs and quotes stay fixed.

Payments, fees and taxes

Interest is the annual nominal contract rate divided by 12, 24, 26 or 52 payments per year. Loans pay at period-end; leases at period-start with a residual at the end. The number of payments is rounded to the nearest whole payment; the resulting duration is shown when it differs from the entered months. This is an equal-period estimate, not a daily-interest lender quote. No accelerated conversion is implied. At 0% interest, capital less residual is divided across payments. Amounts are not rounded internally.

Loan tax applies to price plus financed taxable fees less an eligible gross trade-in. Net trade-in equals the offer minus old debt. For a lease, net trade-in and before-tax down payment reduce capital; tax is paid on the cash down and each payment. Return fees, excess kilometres and buyout fees use the entered rate. Licence/registration and quoted PPSA/RDPRM charges are non-taxable upfront amounts in this model; enter any taxable portion under taxable fees. Confirm treatment on your dealer quote.

One lease or two consecutive leases

The horizon is the end of the last lease, or the scheduled loan term in loan-only mode. With two leases, the first vehicle is returned and its return charges are paid. New down payment, fees and payments apply to the second vehicle. No trade-in from the returned first vehicle is assumed. The final vehicle can be returned or bought in cash. The loan vehicle’s resale value and the final lease vehicle’s value may differ. No lease is repeated automatically.

Exclusions and practical tips

No automatic luxury tax, incentives, private-sale rules, tax exemptions, business deductions, variable rates, early termination, wear/damage charges or financed buyout. Include applicable charges and rebates in the quoted selling price. Running costs are fixed monthly averages for each option, not automatic age-based forecasts. Compare written quotes and check mileage limits, wear rules, prepayment and return terms before signing. Your resale values are assumptions; review the low/high scenarios.

How to use this vehicle lease vs loan calculator

Choose loan, lease or comparison mode and enter the actual quotes, payment schedules, taxes, fees and trade-in details. Compare cash due, recurring payments and total cost after retained vehicle value over the same horizon. Resale and running costs are your assumptions; the lowest modeled cost can differ from the option with the lowest payment.

Amounts are in Canadian dollars. Read the calculation methods, sources and review status.
